Puerto AllegreWe have a few regular places for brunch on the weekends, and Puerto Allegre is one of those places. To become a "regular" haunt, a place needs to have at least one dish that we crave, that will actually motivate us to get up and out of the house. Puerto Allegre has two: the chilaquiles with green sauce, and with red. We always order these, and we never deviate who orders what. Chilaquiles is basically corn tortilla chips and eggs scrambled with sauce and cheese on top. But it can vary substantially. Many restaurants add in additional ingrediants like chorizo or chicken. Some places do lunch and dinner versions that have minimal or no eggs. Some places call their dish "chilaquiles" but serve something more like migas (an eggs, tortilla, etc. casserole-ish dish served in Texas). The reason we consider Puerto Allegre's version of chilaquiles to be Best In Show is that they dredge the chips in sauce, refried them, then scramble them with the eggs producing a nice crunch instead of soggy chips. It's quite lovely. |
